Summer Camp Counselors
More than half of our counselors have T1D and have previously been to Camp Surefire as campers themselves. All (100%) of our counselors volunteer and dedicate a full week of their lives to make sure their campers have a safe and positive camp experience. Camp Surefire would not be possible without them!
Due to our high retention rate, counselor positions at Camp Surefire are competitive. All potential counselors must complete a detailed application process, including relevant background checks. Counselors who have come up through the ranks (as campers/LITs) are given preference but are not guaranteed a position. We also have a strong partnership with the University of Rhode Island, where undergraduate students serve as counselors and receive credit for their immersive learning experience.
All counselors complete online training modules prior to coming to camp. They also report to camp one day early (August 17th) to receive additional on-site training from our medical staff. This training provides the counselors with an excellent learning experience and helps ensure a positive and safe experience for all campers.
Volunteers
Camp Surefire is run by a dedicated team of volunteers and a very limited paid staff who provide the Camp Surefire Foundation with accounting, social media, and grant writing experience.
Dr. Gregory Fox, the Camp Medical Director, has volunteered as the camp doctor for the past 24 years. Our faithful team of CDOEs, led by Cara Moeller and Robyn Perry, generously volunteer their time and expertise each summer. Their team’s presence is critical at every meal, snack, and camp activity.
It takes many volunteers to make camp possible for our campers. Our preference is for volunteers who can commit to the full camp week. However, we do have a few spots for daily volunteers. Please note that parents of current campers/LITs are not eligible to volunteer during camp week.
If you are interested in volunteering, please register online and/or email afox@campsurefire.org for more information.
Thanks to Dr. Fox and all the volunteers for all of the incredible hard work and energy that you put into making Camp Surefire such a success. Your obvious love of the child and commitment to their safety and health shines through everything you do.”
