We are thrilled to announce that Hannah Guevremont and Emily Velasquez were both selected to receive the 2026 Camp Surefire Summer Internship award. Hannah and Emily were selected from a pool of more than 40 applicants. The internship includes a paid stipend and the opportunity to participate in hands-on research with Dr. Jenny Warnick and her team at Brown University. Hannah and Emily will also be attending Camp Surefire in August as counselors.
Hannah is from Pawtucket, RI, and is currently going into her third year at Rhode Island College, majoring in nursing. She shares:
I’m super thankful to be a part of the team at Brown University Health’s Diabetes and Weight Control Research Center. It brings together so many things I’m passionate about. As someone living with type 1 diabetes, I love learning more about the disease every day! Being involved in this research allows me to contribute to work that can improve the lives of others living with T1D. I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer here, and of course, camp week! I am happy to be growing everyday by learning new skills and knowledge that can shape my future career as a diabetes educator.
Emily Velasquez hails from North Providence, RI and is a student at Stanford University. She studies how biology, child development, and supportive environments shape children’s health and well-being and hopes to build a career improving the lives of children through research and compassionate care. Emily shares:
I’m excited to be part of Camp Surefire’s internship program because it brings together so many of the things I care about — children, learning, and health. Studying how children grow and thrive has made me even more excited to learn from our campers, celebrate their strengths, and help create an environment where every child feels supported, confident, and included.
