Stash Diabetes

April 17, 2026

We are happy to highlight one of our Camp Surefire alumni. Cory Zapatka was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2005 at age 15. Cory was one of Dr. Fox’s patients and attended Camp Surefire as both a camper and counselor (back in the days of Camp Westwood). Flash forward to 2026 and Cory is living and working in Brooklyn, NY with his wife Maddy and their 5-month old daughter.

Because Cory has a lot of free time right now (haha!), he decided to develop an app to help keep track of and manage his diabetes supplies. While he initially designed Stash Diabetes for his own use, he has quickly found that the app is much appreciated by fellow  T1Ds and/or their caregivers.

Cory shares:

One thing that has always bugged me was the lack of inventory trackers for people with diabetes. The mental load needed to juggle all of the insulin pens, insulin vials, sensors, infusion sets, cartridges, tubing, syringes, pen needles, alcohol swabs — it’s never ending. It’s far too easy to lose count and find yourself running low on insulin or be short on sensors before a long work trip or vacation.

With the recent surge of coding agents, I told myself I would finally build the tool that I have been yearning to have for 20+ years: an inventory tracker and trip planner specifically for those living with Type 1 diabetes. So, I sat down and did just that…, I finally have something that I feel really proud to share with the world: Version 1.5 of “Stash” — the first inventory tracker and trip planner specifically for type 1 diabetics.

I posted to Reddit and within an hour I had over 200 downloads — and the feedback from the community has been incredible. In particular, one parent of a type 1 diabetic said “This is way better than the post it notes we use and will be so great to transition our t1 teen to be self supportive!”

I built this app for myself, but seeing that it has already been downloaded by so many people looking for a similar solution makes me really proud of building a tool that will help others.

If you have type 1 diabetes or know somebody who does, please let them know about Stash. Stash is a free app and has some amazing features including trip planning, “side stashes,” and more! Cory would love to receive feedback from users and caregivers. You can reach him by email (czapatka@gmail.com).

Note: Stash is currently only available for iPhone. Sorry Android users. Stay tuned for that option down the road!
